Tim's service

I guess I am only writing this for me, it feels only right to mention this day, as I commented on his passing. Tim’s service was very moving, and although there was a small number who attended, the pain of his loss mingled with the joy of knowing him was keenly felt by all who where there. The day was warm, and sunny with lots of fluffy white clouds. I’m not even sure Tim could have complained about the weather. The casket was carried by his brothers and nephew to the area where the ceremony was held to Johnny Cash’s “Hurt”. His brothers and a close friend spoke, and messages were read out by those who could not be there. During the service, the song “Somewhere Over The Rainbow/ Wonderful World” by Israel KamakawiwoÊ»ole was played. As the singing started, the sun broke through a cloud and lit up the area where we all were stood. Afterwards, there were a couple more readings and then it was time to take Tim to his final resting place, again this was to “Hurt”. He was carried rou...

Tim

This is probably one of the hardest blog entries I have ever had to write. Tim first appeared in our lives when we moved the lighting kit to a new warehouse in 2010, another work aquantence of Simon suggested this pleace, with the added bouns of him and Tim avaliable for labour, and sharing costs with another company. Things didn't quite go to plan, and when the other director in ES wanted to sell out to the director of the cpmp[any, we almost lost the business. Tim was able to persuade a friend of his to buy the other director out (well almost) and we found our current warehouse and moved here in 2011. I'm not going to lie, I didn't always get on with Tim, he could be a grumpy, miserable sod and was slow and methodical to a fault (I worked with him on site once -  a 4 hour job took 12!). I may have mentioned having the urge to beat him to death with cable ties once or twice. On the other hand, he looked after Simon, used to have a ritual of taking Blue for a walk when ...

Another lovely morning

Image
So I was down early to hay/ feed the horses and decided to ride before going to work. Let the horses have hay first so did some poo picking and sorted dogs out first. Wearing HKM Azure Got horses in and gave them a groom then tacked up Matti. Despite using copious amounts of fly spray, he was being irritated by the little blighters so we quickly settled into trot and that seemed to keep them away. As with yesterday, my main aim was to get Matti soft and rounder while maintaining a steady rythym. Although the rythym still needs a bit of work, he was certainly getting the hang of round and softening. He sometimes loses it and then gets very heavy on my hands, but it is early days and more work should help with this (lessons too, but that's a different subject). As he worked so well in trot, his 'reward' was a little canter. I was shocked (in a good way) that he was able to keep a lower outline rather than his 'stargazer' look. Again he lost some balance and g...

Quiet morning

Image
Was working from home today so went down to the yard early(ish) to do the horses and dogs. Brought Amber and Matti in and rode them each for 30 minutes in the school. Matti was first and while warming up I was happy that he was relaxed and in a low outline without a contact. I'm working on this in the trot as normally he either rushes and breaks into canter or goes so slower than his walk. Today he showed some moments of good balance and he even lowered his head carriage, relaxed and worked in a proper outline. I could feel his back come up and he was carrying himself properly, it was one of those eureka moments for sure! And, if that wasn't enough, I also put his bridle on without having to undo the headpeice. I still undid the bit on one side, but was able to pop the bridle over his ears without him having a melt-down (I used the same technique I have for putting his fly fringe on). I still untied him while I did it, just to be on the safe side! Next was Amber, who w...

Pony Camp

Image
It doesn't sem that long ago that we were preparing for pony camp last year, and yet, here we were again, making the finishing touches for this year. Once again Simon was able to get us a marquee, so we got that put up on Thursday evening and moved tables and chairs over. Friday was spent cleaning, moving equipment, raking the school and poo picking. We had an hour or so of watching the rain beat down with thunder rumbling away. Well, apart from Simon as he decided to start putting the tents up as it started to rain. Once the rain had stopped we got the other tent ready. Then it was time for dinner (pasta and bolognaise), Marquee decided that he wanted to share with Lisa and Sue: Afterwards we got the horses in for the first 'event', a twilight hack. I rode Matti and Mum rode Amber (who was pretty much sound). Both were very good, although I did have to keep Matti at the front so he didn't have a chance to get wound up. Mum really enjoyed riding Amber. We ...

The matchy challenge

Image
I have an addiction to sets of matching saddlecloths and bandages (and starting to sway towards fly veils too), otherwise known as matchy-matchy! So I've decided that it will be fun to set myself a little challenge between now and holiday. Every time I ride, I will use a different set of matchy. Now that doesn't mean that I have 60 sets to choose from, but rather than use the same saddlecloth for several days in a row, I will use a different one each time and use the matching bandages to go with it. And, to make it even more interesting, I'm going to see if I can get my top to match too :)

New Shoes

After my farrier offered to do the horses at the last minute, I managed to rearrange my day so they could have their shoes done. As Amber can be a pita, I rode her beforehand. Farrier was a little late so I ended up schooling for an hour. I'm not sure who was more tired. It did help and she was better this time round. Matti was pretty good as normal. So both now have shiny new shoes. Hopefully I can take both for a hack tomorrow, I think Amber in particular will need a gentle leg stretch! In other news, operation move barns has begun :)

A musing update

Seeing as I haven't had a proper think about any of my #14things for a while, and I'm stuck at home ill and bored, I thought it might be a good idea to see what I can add to my list or any other thoughts I may have. I am going to remove some #14things and goals and add a couple of extras. In addition, this is going to be the last year I do them. Every year I have tried but have not really achieved many (if any) of my goals. I enjoy setting up the challenges, but sadly it never seems to work out so I am not going to plan any for next year. At least, that's my gut feeling at the moment. A lot of these goals are actually inter-linked so some need to be done before I can complete others. 1. Be a better me I feel like this one has fallen by the wayside, despite the variety and easy of some of the goals. I thinking about splitting up the goals listed into groups - hobbies (drums, knitting etc), 'education' (languages, courses etc), money (savings and overdraft) an...

Hack with the boys

Image
Hacked Matti again today. Took Blue with us too. Both boys very good again. Did 2.6 miles in 40 minutes, did walk, trot and a little bit of canter. Decided to go for basil matchy :) Matti looking very enthusiastic before we set off!

A quiet morning

Image
Headed up to the yard early as needed to be in the office for lunchtime and was not sure what time we'd be finishing. Brought the horses in and gave them a groom. Rode Amber first. Took her into the school and she once she settled she was more forward going, but decided that it would be interesting to try and do 'quarters-in' the entire time. Sigh. For a lazy horse, she sure uses a lot of energy trying to evade working correctly! Finished off with a short hack in the forest. She was very good and only had a few times when she was sore (normally after stepping on a big, easily avoided stone!). I think she was happy to be out though: Afterwards I decided to take Matti for a hack, and thought it would be nice for Blue to come along too. Got tacked up and then went and let Blue out of the run. He made a beeline for the car and it took him a few minutes to realise what we were doing. Silly dog. We headed out and had a lovely hack. Both boys were very good and we even had ...

Just keep swimming...

Tuesday was our last swimming lesson for the term. Previously we were not sure about joining up for next term, but I think we are both quite keen to do so now. Our last lesson mainly involved playing with balls, floats and seekers and splashing around having fun. Well, apart from when we had to go up to the deep end. Gulp! We had to sit on the edge of the pool with a woggle round our waists and a float in our hands. Hmmm, this wasn't so bad. But then we had to stretch our arms up and lean forward until our float touched the water, and then 'plop' into the water and swim across to the other side. I got the 'plop' part right - I went straight down, then panicked and nearly let go of my float. Managed to get to the surface and then spent the next few minutes watching everyone else doing it effortlessly while I held the edge of the pool in a death grip. Sue was quite nervous about doing it, but did the 'dive' perfectly and swam across to the other side of ...

Amber day off

Amber had a day off, although I don't think she was too happy about that. Put her in the stable while I tool Matti put and she seemed happy enough. Took her to the post when we got back She did make me laugh as despite having a bucket of water in the stable, she didn't want a drink until after I had offered Matti the same water from the same bucket! After I turned them out, she spent a few minutes wanting a fuss before going off to have some hay.

Hacking Matti

Image
Took Matti out with Lucy and Paddy. He was a very good boy. Took the lead but waited nicely when asked too. We did about 2.7 miles in just under an hour.

Amber

Image
Rode again today. Was better than yesterday, but still not right. Was suggested to ride her into more of a contact so I did and that seemed to help. I also had to try and keep riding every time she broke into canter. On clockwise rein, had a lot of bottom in during canter, almost did a canter pirouette at one point.

Matti

Image
Rode again in the school today, although I didn't lunge first this time. He worked well in walk and trot but was a little strong in canter. Fine to tack up, although had little wobbly when the fly fringe got stuck on his ear!

An Update

Seeing as I haven't posted for a while, I thought it was about time I did an update on life in general. 1 Be a better me Not much to update on this one really 2 Amber Amber has had shoe issues again, but hopefully she will be in them again soon so I can get her out hacking. Currently she is fine in the school so am doing short sessions in there for the time being. 3 Matti Matti has gone on full loan, but is still at the yard so I get to see him everyday and keep an eye on him. 4 Mia/ Projects Mia has gone back to her breeder, so a lovely happy ending. I *may* start looking for a project after holiday in September, but am not planning on rushing into anything. I'd rather wait and see if I can find my illusive horse of a lifetime, than get a quirky freebie/ cheapy 5 Blue Still as crazy as ever. 6 Huskies Simon has mainly been exercising the huskies as they are pretty strong now and I'm a weakling so can on manage one at a time. Simon takes them out together...

A little update

I am sorry that I have been quite rubbish recently at keeping my blog up to date, it is a struggle to find the time at the moment, and maybe I am lacking some inspiration/ motivation too. Rather than do my usual break down of each goal, I am just going to update the ones where I have made some progress (not necessarily in order!). 7. Career I've signed up to do another course, hopefully I will be eligible and will be able to start that soon. 6. Huskies Polo went for her first run in harness at the weekend. Simon was on the rig and she was paired up with Indie (one of the racing dogs). She did really well and I think she enjoyed it. I'm hoping we can try Echo this week. 8. Avon Doing quite well so far for this brochure and there is still over a week left to go. 3. Matti I jumped him at the weekend - yes, me, jumping on a horse! Admittedly someone else did ride him for me first, but he pretty good, apart from getting a bit excited. So, not a bad month really, espe...

Any more positive yet?

Image
Sorry if this offends anyone, but I found it rather amusing! Following on from my pity posts. If I am honest, not really. But I have managed to ride Amber and Matti 3 times each this week. I rode Mia once and she decided that she wanted to start napping and threatening to rear just walking in the school, so I loose schooled her over the weekend. I think I shall do this with her as much as possible this week, then try riding her again at the weekend. Doing my normal is it me/ the saddle/ bit/ too much energy via feed/ not enough work/ is she in pain etc type thoughts currently. Rightly or wrongly, I have a gut feeling that she is just being a cowbag and actually probably needs a damn good thrashing (not literally before I get reported for animal cruelty, but I think I need to get all incredible hulk on her and not let her intimidate me - which is easier said than done for me I know). So come the weekend, I'll be armed with a bottle or two of rescue remedy, my hat (obviously...

A productive weekend

Image
And a bit of a tiring one if I do say so. I managed to ride Amber and Matti, plus took Mia in the round pen for some loose schooling twice. Matti decided as he made a mistake the first time I asked him for shoulder in, he had to show me that he could do it every time we went down the long sides of the school. Bless. He also did some nice leg yeilding, including an unintentional one in canter. Amber was persuaded that she could do circles without sticking her head to the outside and swinging her arse right in, or at least almost. A big improvement compared to during the week anyway. Mia found the round pen (and being told what to do via a lunge whip) far to exciting/ annoying, but after some bucking and stomping, she settled down and started to listen to me. She is a bit of a cheeky madam as started being friendly (join -up type stuff) so once I had her back on the rope and asked her to do some leading work, she wasn't interested in me again. So next time, I'll work ...

Feeling like giving up on everything...

I know, I know - I said no more woe is me posts. But I am struggling to think positive about anything at the moment and am starting to wonder if I can ever be the person I want to be - which is a horsewoman, and I am desperate to be a bloody good one at that. But I struggle do even get the basics right like feeding and keeping their health checks up to date (ie teeth, back, saddle checks), let alone riding them that often. Speaking of riding, I'm not particularly great at that and have always felt like I am terrible compared to everyone else. Even since I was a kid and riding Gypsy aka the-tank-off-at-every-opportunity-and-get-worked-up-at-the-thought-of-work and Sceptre aka spawn of satan aka I'm-gonna-make-you-regret-ever-putting-that-saddle-on-me. The fact that my mum wouldn't even let me ride her horse ever probably says everything really. So the fact that I now have 3 pretty difficult horses to ride doesn't really help me feel like I have any skills. Well, ok, ...

February update

I know, I'm a few days late on this one, but I do have a sick note - honest. All in I haven't made a very good start to the year, so I may need to have a re think of my goals. I may need to make them more specific or have weekly targets or something. I do not really know what to do at the moment. Anyway, a breakdown of the little I did achieve: 1. Be a better me Don't really think I achieved anything towards this goal. 2/3/4 Amber/ Matti/ Projects Amber has had front shoes put back on as her footiness has been getting worse over the past few weeks. She's still lame on her front right in trot, so I will be keeping a close eye on her and if she is no better by the end of the week, then it will be time for further investigations. Matti hasn't really had a lot done with him this month if I am honest. As described in some of my previous posts, Mia has been rather challenging. Sadly she's been too much for my confidence which has decided to take up residence un...

How do you solve a problem like Mia?

Image
After the issues with hacking Mia, my confidence has decided to run off to Tunisia without me. The fact that she has now decided to start rearing while tied up when she has decided that she's had enough isn't exactly helping the situation. I know and appreciate that she is a horse, and this is her way of dealing with stress, but I really do not know how to cope with rearing. Pretty much anything else I can cope with, but not rearing. So, I really have 2 choices. Sell her or keep her and get on with it. If I sell her, it may take a while to find her the right home as I will be honest about her 'quirks', and, to be fair, when you write it all down on paper, she doesn't sound like the most appealing of horses. She's not able to jump, she can't be shown (due to a scar) and she doesn't hack alone! I'm not sure how she is going to be in company again now she has found her "up yours" reaction. Although I think she's do great at dressage,...

Little Miss Innocent...not part 3

Well, today was fun. If sitting astride a horse who likes pretending to be a human and walks on their back legs can be classed as fun. Once I got on, Sue followed behind with the rope and apart from one stop, Mia walked striaght out and across the stream. Got to her 'sticky spot' and she just went up. No warning, just stright up (and f*****g high). Landed and up again. And again, then tried to whip round for home. I turned her back round, but other than keeping her facing forwards I sat still. Went backwards a bit, then up again, then forward. Up. Sideways. Up. Backwards. Up. Up. You get the idea. Just when I thought she'd given in, she went up again (very f*****g high), turned 180 on her back legs, landed and bronced. How exactly I satayed on I have no idea, especially as at one point there was definalty nothng between me and the ground. Ended up around her neck like some kind of monkey while she cantered back to the yard. Safe to say at this point I wanted to get off an...

Little Miss Innocent... not part 2

Just as I was hoping that things were getting better, we had a very difficult hack today. Mia was fine to tack up and I got on fine. As we got to the end of the barn she started to play up. As well as the stopping, reversing and spinning, we had quite a bit of rearing. I pushed her on a bit more today, rather than just sitting it out. We managed to get out eventually thanks to Sue, who was able to swing a long rope behind Mia to encourage her forwards. Once she went out, she was striding out nicely until about 30 yards away when she planted and did a few rears. I managed to get her going again until the crossroads when she had another 'moment'. I was just starting to get through to her, when a quad appeared with at least 3 teenagers on board and they were heading stright for us. I dedcided to turn Mia to the left and we made a fast exit away from the quad. They turned the opposite way to us, so I realised that we would be likely to meet them again further on. Got Mia back t...

Happy Birthday to the most special man in my life

Image
Sorry Simon! My Grandad Ray On the 8th February, my Grandad celebrated his 80th birthday. He decided that he wanted a party, which my mum, aunt and uncles organised for him. Many friends and relatives turned up - I think about 90 people in all were there. It was a lovely day and so nice to be there to celebrate the life of a wonderful man, and the best Grandad in the world. Hacking Mia Update

Well, after a weekend off, today Mia decided that she did not want to even leave the yard, she planted, reversed and tried to spin round. She has a couple of rears, but not too bad. Jackie was raking the school so come over to help by walking next to Mia. This helped and once we were out in the forest she was fairly good. I say fairly as we did have a bit of an argument at the crossroads - I wanted to go straight across and she wanted to go in any direction other than straight on. We did have to stop to wait for one of the Forest Commissary cars to go past us. I was a little worried about how she might react, but she stood nicely and turned round when I asked so that I could show my tag to the driver. We did make it the whole way round, and in one piece, so I think it was a success. Next time she should be better as she is getting used to the route and I am not letting her get away with being naughty.

A saner hack

After the fun from yeasterday, I decided that I would try the hack again on Mia - hopefully this time without any napping, rearing or rogue deer sent to attack us. There was a small amount of napping, but no rearing or rogue deer. Mia did try to do all in a fast trot again, but this time I was able to get her to walk nicely and ask her for trot when I wanted to trot. She did stop at the place where the deer appeared yesterday, but after a few seconds, she walked on again. She got lots of fuss while she was being good, and I probably bored both of us senseless with my inane chatter, which was simply to keep the pair of us calm. Well, ok, mainly me! As I will be away for much of the weekend, I probably will not be able to ride again until Monday, but by then she may have realised that hacking on her own is not that scary and I will get her to do it, not matter what she throws at me.

Little Miss Innocent - or not

Image
So... I had the genis idea to take Mia for a hack on her own. In the piddling rain. And there was a *slight* breeze. Taking up was fine. Getting on was fine. Heading out accross the stream was fine. Got about 30m up the track and she stopped. And reversed. Then reared. And did some more reversing. And reared again. She felt like she was looking for a fight, so I decided not to give her one. I just sat quietly but would not let her turn back to the yard. After a few minutes she walked on. She did the stop/ reverse a few more times, but thankfully no more rearing. Once she got going, she decided that storming off in trot was the best course of action. I decided to push her on as at least she was going forward, until we started cantering. Got her settled and was on the last turn to home when about 15 deer suddenly appeared in front of us. They shot off and Mia decided to do a 180 degree turn. I followed about 3 seconds later. I'm still not sure how i ended up back in the saddl...

January update

Seriously, where has the month gone? Talk about blink and you miss it! Anyway, just a little update on my goals so far this month. 1. Be a better me I don't feel like I have done much with this one. I have been getting more organised, or at least as organised as I can get while living/ working with the most un-organised person on the planet! Being mobile has certainly helped with this, I've also set a routine for the week now too, rather than having to rely on Simon/ public transport/ kind friends to get me places. I have managed to save some money - not a huge amount, granted, but having some money left in my account at the end of the money is a big plus for me. Other than that, I haven't done much else on my bullet list, so new goal is to try harder next month! 2/3/4 Amber/ Matti/ Projects Thought I'd just group these together, as they are all quite similar. Generally, I've not got anywhere near as much riding done as I would have liked. I have been workin...

Planning

I have tried not to do to much planning recently - mainly because if things don't happen when I've planned them to, I get quite down about it. However, I'm going to start doing some 'gentle' planning so that I can use my time more efficiently. The fact that I now have my little car means that I am more flexible with travelling. For example, when it is my turn to do the horses in the morning, I can get everything ready in the morning and have them down on the rota to be brought in at night so that I can spend a full day in the office and stay as long as I need, rather than having to rush out to do the horses again (which also saves on fuel and travel time). I can also work it with Simon on some other days that I go to the yard early, get everything ready, squeeze in a ride then head off to office or home office and he brings the horses in at night. This means I can spend more time in the office, even when Simon is out and about as I am not 'trapped' there w...

A good week.

It's Friday afternoon, almost time to finish work, so I thought I'd do a little blog on my week. It has been a very good week so far :) On Monday, my Uncle Eugene brought my car over from Kent and since then I have been driving every day - most of my trips have been solo too! I've been quite good and only done journeys I've needed to do. The 'road trips' start next week :) I've also managed to get some riding done this week, 3 hacks on Mia. Yesterday one of the girls from the yard borrowed Matti for a hack too. I've also made progress with Mia and her 'reluctance' to cross the stream. Went out for a hack on Tuesday evening, headed out the normal way, got to the stream and she planted. Tried for a few minutes, then got off, hoping she might follow. Nope, not playing ball. She wasn't scared either, just said 'make me'. Sue and Misty came to the rescue and stood behind Mia to encourage her forwards until she was at the edge of the st...

Have wheels. Will travel

Image
After passing my driving test last year, I haven't been able to drive that much. My grandad and mum decided that I needed a car, so have been keeping an eye out for one for me. Grandad spotted one near his house around Christmas and asked mum and Eddie to have a look at it. Eddie decided it was suitable as a first car, so they picked it up a couple of weeks ago. Today, my Uncle brought it from Kent to Hook. I drove him to the yard as he wanted to see the horses, then I took him to the train station. After that, I was to go solo for the very first time. I was pretty nervous, but remembered to breathe and didn't go any faster than I felt happy with and was ok. Getting from the yard to home later on was a little more scary as it was dusk (something else I have not dealt with before), but I managed to get home safely. Tomorrow I will be driving to the office on my own. Hopefully the journeys will go as smoothly as they did today.

9. Become a better horsewoman

This was one of my #13things, but I realised that I never actually specified what the aim(s) of it was. So, seeing as everyone can always improve, I thought I would include it in this years goals. Of course, I am sure this list is far from exhaustive. Regain my confidence jumping This might take a while, but I am hoping that eventually I can complete a 2'3" course without having a meltdown. Hack alone confidently Not that I really have to do this very often, I think it might be useful to know that I can take the horses out on their own and not be worried by it. Improve my riding position I know what my faults are, I just need to spend some (ok, maybe a lot) of riding sessions working on correcting them Have regular riding lessons Mainly to improve my position and aids, but also to learn new exercises Do more groundwork training I enjoyed doing ground work with the horses in the summer, so when the round pen has dried out, I'm aiming to do some more. In addit...

8. Avon

Last summer, during a chat about fly spray (of all things) and that Avon have a body spray which is great for keeping flies and bugs away, the seed was sown for me to think about becoming an Avon rep. I looked into it and decided to give it a go, with the plan of just selling to friends and family. I have done quite well so far, so one of my aims is to see if I can push it further and earn some money from Avon. One of the ways to do this is to take on a street or two in the local area, which I still a little unsure about doing, so at the moment I am seeing what else I can do to get people interested in buying bits and bobs.

Stormin' err, Amber

Image
I was very brave on Monday and took Amber out for a hack. Alone. This is a very big thing for me as I don't really like hacking alone (says she who used to hack out down busy roads without batting an eyelid - the confidence/ idiocy of youth!). Amber is currently shoeless as a) she is not in much work, b) she has very good hooves and c) she is a tit for our farrier so have gone back to basics with handling her hooves until she behaves perfectly for him. She is a little sore at times, but its one of those I need to work her to get her hooves tougher situations now. Set off and she was rather wobbly to start, I wasn't sure if this was because she was alone or her feet were sore. She started to settle and was walking nicely, so I decided to try a little trot which went well. Got to one of the softer up hill tracks and we had a canter. I admit that I may not have been in as much control as I would have liked! Amber then spooked at a log and dropped back into trot, before try...

Back in the saddle

With the weather recently, it has been very difficult to ride. I don't mind heading out in a bit of light rain, but sheets of rain and strong winds does not make for a relaxing hack. The weekend was better so I managed to go for a hack on Mia with Louise on Saturday and then out with Lisa and Sue on Sunday with Matti. I think everyone else was making the most of it too as we saw lots of other riders, joggers and dog walkers out and about in the forest. Mia was a little looky as when I have taken her out before, we have not really seen anyone else. She stopped as two joggers ran towards us, but didn't do anything else and she stopped to watch the horse and dog canter towards us, but again didn't spook or do anything else. Matti was much better than the last time I hacked him out. He got a bit silly once when he was at the back, and decided that canter was the new trot for a bit, but other than that he was fine, even when he was behind the others. Daft horse! However, I...

The List - updates

7. Career

I guess this could have gone under the "be a better me" category, but I wanted this to be so epic, that it would need its own #14things label. Firstly, I am not really looking for a new job. However, to be able to do my current one even better than my best, I do want to invest some time and money in developing my skills and learning new ones. Of course this also means that if I need/ want to find another job, I have a good base of skills and knowledge to help me on my way. I can split this into a couple of sections, one is increasing my responsibilities in my current job. Another is useful skills/ qualifications to learn. Responsibilities Accounts - taking full responsibility of the accounts will mean it's easier for just me to make payments, chase outstanding payments and pester for receipts!
